The award-winning group Greensky Bluegrass makes its Morgantown debut Wednesday night at 123 Pleasant Street.

Award-winning bluegrass group Greensky Bluegrass will make its debut appearance in Morgantown Wednesday when it takes the stage at 123 Pleasant Street.

With nearly a decade of recording and performing under its belt, the group has embarked on an extensive tour that has brought them to Morgantown, according to dobro player Anders Beck.

"We’ve seen a lot of people in the area traveling to our shows in surrounding states, so it’s great to finally get a show in Morgantown," Beck said. "We’re just really excited about bringing our show to these fans."

With a sound bordering on bluegrass but influenced by numerous of historic musicians, Beck believes that the music of Greensky Bluegrass is almost unmatched in regards to originality.

"We like to play music all across the board, and our influences are very widespread," Beck said. "We’ll cover everything from the Talking Heads to The Beatles to the Grateful Dead. We just like focusing on original songs and playing music that has influenced us in some way."

However, bluegrass will always hold a special place in the music of Greensky Bluegrass.

"We will usually play whatever grabs us at a certain time, but bluegrass has always played a role in how we approach the music," Beck said.

Greensky Bluegrass is also known for its high energy performances, which Beck attributes to the group’s wide variety of original performances.

"We like to play different shows every night based a lot upon the mood of the crowd and the mood of the band," Beck said. "Night to night there is never anything set in stone, but that’s what I feel our fans like – the unexpected."

Performing at a venue such as 123 Pleasant Street also plays into the unique qualities of Greensky Bluegrass, according to Beck.

"Playing at these more intimate venues brings us back to our roots, a more bluegrass, bar room type deal," Beck said. "It’s always exciting to get in front of a crowd, no matter where the venue. It’s just a positive atmosphere all around."

Performing with Greensky Bluegrass tonight is Todd Sheaffer from the group Railroad Earth.

"We’re real excited about performing with Todd, who I consider one of the best songwriters in the country at the moment," Beck said. "He will be performing a solo set and joining us on stage for a few songs. It’s going to be a great musical collaboration and a real exciting night."

Greensky Bluegrass and Todd Sheaffer will perform Wednesday at 123 Pleasant Street beginning at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
