The Monongalia Arts Center will host two gallery openings today: "The Gallery of Gifts" and "The Bevy" by West Virginia University's Eta Lambert Chapter of Kappa Pi.
"The Bevy" exhibition will hold its opening reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This exhibition is the first of the fraternity's showings. It will be held in the Robert M. Davis gallery, which was opened in 2004 and made especially for new and emerging artists, according to John Javins, a curator at the MAC.
WVU's Creative Arts Center and the MAC are working in collaboration for this event.
"This was our first organized activity, and we decided to do an art show," said Aaron Williams, a visual art major and member of Kappa Pi. "Since this is our first event, we will see how things go. We'll be getting used to being organized but will have more events next semester and next year."
Williams does frequent volunteer work at the MAC, and his work was displayed there in March 2009.
"I set us up at the MAC and got dates ready, but everybody did a part," Williams said.
The gallery will show about 15 pieces of art representing several different forms.
The presented art will include various types of prints, steel and wooden sculptures, paintings, drawings and casts, Williams said.
"The Gallery of Gifts" is an annual event that has been going on for over 10 years, Javins said.
The event will open today with its opening reception to take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. "Gallery of Gifts" will close Dec. 22.
There will be various types of arts and crafts for sale, and the selling prices are between $20 and $400, so the items are "not out of this world expensive," Javins said.
A portion of the proceeds will go to supporting the MAC.
"The Gallery of Gifts" reception will also feature writer Bill Duff Jr. signing copies of his most recent book, "Now I Did It," as well as Cathy Richards who will be selling her sterling silver jewelry.
Javins said this is feel-good event, and encourages people to come out and support the local economy.
