A poetry slam called Tha.Speakeasy will take place at Club Octane & The Taylor Morgan Deli today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tha.Speakeasy is an event that celebrates the work of local poets, musicians and artists, bringing them together to compete for a locally sponsored prize. The prize for tonight’s winner will be lunch for two at The Taylor Morgan Deli.

Poets who would like to compete are welcome but are required to sign up in advance.

The slam consists of three rounds of spoken word and winners of each round advance to the next until a final winner is chosen. Poems can only be three minutes or less in length, and the artist cannot use props or any form of costume so that the winner will win solely for their poetry.

The event is open to the public, and many are encouraged to come and watch. Joining the audience is the first step to joining the competition according to frequent slam-goers.

"I love poetry, and I am looking forward to going and watching the competition," said Darell Jones, a local Morgantown resident. "Going to the competitions definitely makes me want to join myself. I have been to a couple of the competitions. I am just nervous compete myself, but I plan to one day."

Getting involved in the community’s efforts to bring the importance of the spoken word and the arts has urged students such as Kayla Light, a West Virginia University freshman general studies major, to do the same.

"Competitions like this encourage me to write more and submit my work not only to competitions, but other things as well," Light said.

To sign up for the slam, visit Tha.Speakeasy Web site at www.myspace.com/tha_speakeasy.
