Funky soul/R&B band Sade has returned with its first album in more than 10 years, "Soldier of Love."
The group responsible for big hit "Smooth Operator" released its last album "Lovers Rock" back in 2000 and have reached triple platinum status in since then.
The first single from the album, also titled "Soldier of Love," is a soulful R&B track with heavy jazz and rock influences.
Lead vocalist Sade Adu’s voice is empowering on this song.
The song’s sound is completely original yet still carries the band’s same unique sound.
Adu sings about how love is a battlefield, but you have to tell yourself that you are a soldier who will survive.
The song has already seen moderate success after its digital release and has landed the band its highest debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 58.
"Morning Bird," the third track on the album, begins with a haunting sound and
focuses more on Adu’s voice, which is melancholy, yet soothing.
One of the album’s most poetic songs, "Babyfather," tells the story of a man fathering his child.
The deepest part of the song lies in the chorus when Adu sings "your daddy knows you’re a flame ... "
On "Long Hard Road," the band talks about going on a lengthy journey and how difficult it may be.
In the song, Sade encourages people to continue following down whatever path is being traveled, whether it’s easy or difficult.
"In Another Time" has a neo-soul/jazz sound reminiscent of the old days.
The song title is extremely fitting with the lyrics and the song altogether.
"Skin" is one of the best songs on the album and has a sensual feel to it.
The music the band plays along with Adu’s voice make a beautiful combination and contrasts well in this song.
She even gives Michael Jackson a shout-out in the song before singing, saying that she is "gonna peel you away" and "wash you off my skin."
Altogether, Sade shows a triumphant return with its latest album and is already the current No. 1 album on iTunes.
"Soldier of Love" is in stores today.
