West Virginia University is partnering with local organizations and businesses to solicit donations of unused clothing for those in need.
The Office of Sustainability and SustainU Clothing and Apparel have teamed up along with Another World is Possible to create the oneSHIRT Clothing Drive, which encourages every student and resident to donate one shirt or article of clothing.
"A clothing drive is great for college students because giving an extra shirt is simpler to us than giving money," said Rachael Fitzwater, a member of Campus Crusade for Christ, a group contributing to the campaign. "There are so many people in need, right here in our area, that we often overlook."
Boxes for donations are in Arnold Hall, Bennett and Braxton Towers, Fieldcrest Hall, Honors Hall, Lincoln Hall, Pierpont Apartments and Summit Hall today through Friday.
Clothing donations will also be accepted at so.zo on High Street. The donations will go to Goodwill Industries International, Inc. Those that can’t be worn will be recycled.
"I think the oneSHIRT Campaign helps our students realize the power of individuals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of other people," said Trish Cendana, director of WVU Residential Education.
"This campaign is twofold in that it educates students on the importance of recycling to improve the conditions of our environment while giving back to our community at the same time."
OneSHIRT is part of a larger campaign, "Another World is Possible," which focuses on social issues and is hosting speakers presenting on social justices in the Morgantown community this week.
Another World is Possible is a week "to inform, engage and mobilize students and community members to make a difference in our world," according to its Web site.
"Our three pillars of sustainability are economy, environment and social responsibility. Our clothes are 100 percent recyclable, and everything is created in the United States," said Anthony Giambrone, director of Collegiate Relations at SustainU Clothing and Apparel. "So, we needed to address the social responsibility portion to benefit the community around us."
Groups involved in the clothing drive include: WVU’s Office of Sustainability, WVU residence halls, Student Government Association, WVU recycling program, Facilities and Services, Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design’s Division of Design and Merchandising, Campus Crusade for Christ, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Baptist Campus Ministry, St. John’s Church’s Newman Club, Canterbury Christian Fellowship, Chestnut Ridge Church’s 17three, Another World is Possible, SustainU clothing and apparel, Sign Factory and Goodwill Industries International, Inc.
