In an effort to give back to the community, Kappa Sigma Fraternity is having a clothing and food drive this week to benefit the homeless.

There will be a booth in the Mountainlair each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to collect donated items.

"We are asking for warm clothes and canned food items," said Matthew Murtagh, community service chair for Kappa Sigma.

"We want to give people a better Thanksgiving and a warmer winter," Murtagh said.

All clothing and nonperishable food items will be donated to the Bartlett House, a local homeless shelter, to benefit the needy during the holiday season.

"It’s a good cause. Not a lot of people think about it all the time," Murtagh said. "So Greek life can help raise awareness by doing things like this."

Also raising awareness for the community, Theta Chi Fraternity held its annual dodgeball tournament Sunday.

This tournament is especially important to the fraternity, said Kevin McCarthy, philanthropy coordinator for Theta Chi.

"We support the Steven Landis Foundation, a foundation for leukemia," he said. "He was a brother of Theta Chi who passed away, so we want to donate in his name."

The fraternity raises money and awareness and promotes support for leukemia research during the tournament.

Throughout fall and spring, Greek life holds philanthropic events to support the community and raise awareness for different causes.

"We live in this community, and it’s important to give back," McCarthy said. "Not only does it show that the community cares about people and what happens, but this Greek system as a whole cares too."
