Humor website mocks WVU students, athletics, academics

An anonymous duo has started a humorous website called Mountaineer Irony, Morgantown's "Satirical Holler."

The site, Mountaineer Irony, which released one of two updates on Monday, provides a satirical twist on West Virginia University students, athletics and academics.

The goal of the site is "to offend people who offend me," said "Quill", author and co-creator of Mountaineer Irony.

Quill wishes to remain anonymous because he is active on campus, he said. Due to legal reasons, Mountaineer Irony has no affiliation with WVU, he added.

"If I can make a state college female think twice before donning a pair of Uggs, then I have saved high fashion. If I can make said female not go to ‘Sex and the City 2,' I have saved culture," Quill said.

"Really, I just want state college females to reconsider the cultural morass they've dug themselves into."

Quill said the site follows a format similar to other college humor websites such as the Phroth at Pennsylvania State University and the Georgetown Heckler at Georgetown University.

Headlines and short stories are updated to the site every Monday, he said.

"Nation's State Colleges Defenseless against New Jersey, FBI Warns," reads one of the site's top headlines.

In the story, Quill writes phrases like, "NJ's (New Jerseyians) dispatch their lesser sons and daughters to Northeastern state universities as a proactive strategy to crush academic standards and integrity at outside schools".

The story goes on to say that "Female NJ's can easily be spotted by the OBX sticker they bought when they visited North Carolina once last spring."

After reading the article, Christy Pape, a sophomore general studies major, said she found the story hilarious and definitely plans to read more from the site.

Freshman general studies major, Erika Orlikoff, said she would prefer to read about something else.

"I think it's kind of pretentious," she said. "Without people from New Jersey, WVU wouldn't be WVU."

Mountaineer Irony is a two-man project, Quill said. Quill does the writing and his partner performs the site's management and Photoshop, he said.

Generally, the site has received positive feedback for its stories.

"I received loads of hate mail for the College Republicans article, presumably from people who would blow up my website if it were an abortion clinic," Quill said.

"Oddly enough, they weren't offended by the story's idea of Republicans starting a racially exclusionist club, but at the fact I was insinuating that they owned yachts."

Morgantown in itself is a story, he said, and that is where he finds his inspiration.

"‘Did that man in the camouflage K-5 blazer really just shout both a racial and homophobic epithet at me?'" Quill said.

"Yes he did. Inspiration. If that doesn't work, I just go to Black Bear (Burritos) and mock the hipsters."

George Turner, senior religious studies major, said the stories didn't make him laugh out loud, but they were still OK.

"Basically, it's taking something joked about on campus and mocking it a bit," he said.

Quill said his humor isn't for everyone.

"There are two types of people in this town. Those who revel in its absurdity, and those who are aware of it," Quill said.

"My stories are designed for the latter. The former can visit collegehumor.com and enjoy its pastiche of breast and fart jokes."

The Onion is quite popular, but even they 'copied' other fake newspapers. Harvard's has been around for ages. Every major college has one of these, and it's about damn time WVU gets one. There are too many things to pick on to not have one.

The format is derivative (but then again, so is every other campus humor newspaper), but the comedic writing isn't. It's absurd to suggest that once you emulate a comedic template the funny just falls into place.

But then again, let's just readily dismiss everything on the internet with one sentence.

Being funny sure is easy when you rip off the Onion.

What the hell is the address of the site? Might be an important thing to include in the story!

The coach stewart article is SO true. Here's to a good year of WVU sports!

Chris Walters probably cried over these articles. I know him personally and he is a very sensitive man who really takes to heart what people say about him. You should be ashamed of yourselves. He can't help the way he looks or acts. Stop calling him gay and a racist because I really doubt he is and probably has never been to a gay strip club.

The admin lives with the writer, about 30 mins outside of Morgantown. The address is obviously bull.

Mr. Legal One,

Stop providing false legal council. Indeed the case could be heard in court, but these punitive repercussions you're suggesting are absurd. Since the site is billed as a satirical website, and since from what I can surmise, the web administrator complied with a threat of legal action and followed up with criticism of elected figures which is constitutionally protected, the case would not result in this valiant legal verdict that this legal layment is suggesting about protecting our political figures.

Satire is protected. I only saw the edited portion of the story, and from what I can ascertain, putting words in Walter's mouth is grounds for legal action. However, there is a legal gulf between hearing a case and ruling on it. In this case, the relatively innocuous nature of the website combined with the administrator's compliance would not result in the ruling you're suggesting. Either you're a student of the Tier 3 law school here, or you're a partisan throwing out legal advice heard from a Boston Public episode. Regardless, learn more about law before you spout off on it.

And if anyone at Mountaineer Irony is reading this, I'm sending you an e-mail offering you legal advise (I'm not a specialist in this by any means). But if any of these puerile types attempt to browbeat you I can at least point you in the right direction. It's time someone has a creative pulse in this town I desperately need to get out of. DUI cases does not the soul nourish.

Anon wins.

I do not agree with making fun of Republicans... they do that to themselves enough! Well, Palin anyways. This site gets two thumbs up.

Anon writes, "I fully support New Jersey breaking off from the continental United States and sinking into the ocean."

I think "Real Housewives of New Jersey" and "Jersey Shore" are justification enough for this.

I fully support New Jersey breaking off from the continental United States and sinking into the ocean.

Though, seeing as that won't happen in my lifetime (thanks, nature), I support anything else that picks on New Jersey and the scum bred there.

And I agree that College Humor is funny, but only once or twice per year (not counting user-submitted stuff, I mean the actual staff-produced works).

To the anonymous poster at 18:52:
You really are a moron. I'm sure that your talking points from Sean Hannity told you that was what you were supposed to say, but half of the stuff you mention has nothing to do with the website. And if this is the first generation that you've heard make fun of Republicans then you have only been alive for what? Five minutes? Your comment about free speech going too far is so hypocritical. You can't pick and choose what freedom of speech applies to. By the way, The Onion has been doing the same thing for about 20 years so this isn't a new phenomenon. Maybe if you walk out of your trailer for more than a minute you'd learn a thing or two.

Their humor may be a little too much to handle for the average person, but they do a brilliant job satirizing some of the things that WVU is way too notorious for being. The Terri Schiavo thing wasn't that funny though. Not because it was offensive, but it is rather irrelevant. The joke about Jersey girls and OBX made me laugh. Back home in VA everyone has them, but it never really occurred to me that OBX bumper stickers are a pandemic. Anyone who can make a joke at the expense of that Godforsaken state of New Jersey has my support.

I agree with the first poster. Free speech has gone too far nowadays. First we got the mosque now we have this website. Ive never seen anything make fun of republicans until this generation. You left-wing loons need to stop taking the words of your rappers and film actresses on politics and learn some real news. And whatever happened to good old blue collar comedy and not puttin words in peoples mouths.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Anonymous" who posted on 9/1/2010 at 01:40, you're sorely mistaken. In that case, The Onion would be immediately taken down as they have posted numerous stories with fake events and happenings including everyone from sports stars to presidents. If anything, even Fox News would be unsafe due to their blatant distortions of what is actually said by others.

I think the site is funny, and it's about time WVU gets picked on. And that's what this is: being picked on. If you like it, great, if not, don't read it. Threatening that "they can't do that" really holds no weight. If that truly were the case, nobody could say anything about anyone ever.

Oh, and the chair article is the best so far. That's damn funny!
