The Athletic Coaching Education Club will be hosting a mixed martial arts clinic today to showcase one of the fastest growing sports in Morgantown.
Four local groups will be participating in the clinic: Morgantown Martial Arts and Personal Fitness, Blackhawk Mixed Martial Arts, the West Virginia University boxing club and WVU Jiu-jitsu Team/Ground Zero Fighting Systems.
"This is a chance to meet real fighters, hear from experienced coaches and get a look inside the sport," said John Mouser, the Athletic Coaching Education Club treasurer.
Each will present their specialty, credentials and demonstrate what their gym or program offers.
Morgantown Martial Arts and Personal Fitness specializes in submission wrestling and Muay Thai.
Blackhawk Mixed Martial Arts is a new gym focusing on cage fighting and women’s kickboxing.
The nationally ninth-ranked WVU boxing club will demonstrate amateur boxing, and WVU Jiu-jitsu Team/Ground Zero will showcase Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Gyms will also be selling merchandise, and students have the chance to sign up for gym memberships at the clinic.
"It’s a really convenient event if you’re into mixed martial arts because there will be a lot of different places located in Morgantown in one spot," said Samantha Patton, president of the Athletic Coaching Education Club. "People will come out knowing a lot more than they originally did."
The clinic will be held in the Blue and Gold Rooms of the Evansdale Residential Complex from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and will cost $7 at the door or $5 for those who RSVP.
The donations support the Athletic Coaching Club’s events, trips and merchandise.
