As Morgantown residents continue to deal with the snow from Friday’s snowstorm, the city must prepare for another significant storm expected for Monongalia County Tuesday afternoon.
Rich Kane, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said more snow is expected.
"You may get one to two inches of accumulation before rush hour depending on how much freezing rain is mixing in with the snow," he said.
The region will see 3 inches to 7 inches by Thursday morning depending on the kind of wintery mix that falls.
"Roads could be pretty hazardous Tuesday night and overnight as well and even into Wednesday," Kane said.
West Virginia University has no plans to cancel classes yet but will be closely monitoring the situation.
"We will just watch what is happening and if it is worsening, we may make the determination to cancel classes like we did on Friday," said Becky
Lofstead, assistant vice president
for Communications at WVU.
"We rely on the National Weather Service, 911, and other emergency agencies to advise us on the weather conditions," Lofstead said. "If the governor would declare a state of emergency, that would be a factor as well. We monitor a lot of things before making a final determination, always having what’s best for the West Virginia community at heart."
Lofstead urged students and faculty to take caution when traveling in inclement weather.
"Use extreme caution when traveling. If for some reason you can’t make it, stay in contact with your professors if you are a student or your supervisor if you’re an employee," Lofstead said. "They’ll be understanding if you can’t make it to class or to work."
Morgantown and the surrounding areas were hit with a hefty snowfall starting Friday evening that left as much as 20 inches of snow in the region in 72 hours, according to the National Weather Service.
The University canceled classes Friday at 1 p.m. and closed at 3 p.m. after Gov. Joe Manchin declared a state of emergency in West Virginia. As the town continued to dig themselves out from underneath the snow, classes were canceled on Monday.
