Multiple fires, couch burnings keep authorities busy after win

Couch

The charred remains of a couch sits on the side of a road in Sunnyside after the basketball game Saturday night.

The Morgantown Fire Department responded to as many as 27 fires Saturday night following West Virginia University’s win against Georgetown University for the title of Big East Tournament champions.

Most fires were in student housing areas, said Morgantown Fire Department Capt. Dave Bolyard. He said many seemed to be in the Sunnyside area and the North Willey, Spruce and Price streets area.

Approximately four were dumpster fires, Bolyard said, adding there is still damage attributed to dumpster fires.

"Any time there’s a fire in a dumpster, the company that has the dumpster claims that the damage destroys the plastic lids," Bolyard said. He did not know if any other damage was caused by fires Saturday.

The Morgantown Police Department also responded to approximately 15 calls about fires.

They were spread out between Sunnyside and the Snyder Street area, said MPD Sgt. Bryon Hennessey.

He said arrests were made for malicious burning and attempting to start street fires.

"Other than that, it was a pretty normal night for a weekend," Hennessey said. "The biggest problems were street and dumpster fires."

The amount of penalties for malicious fires rose last May as an amendment to the Morgantown City Prevention Codes was passed by the Morgantown City Council.

If found guilty, the person is fined $1,000. Malicious burning includes couches and dumpster fires, among other things.

While the city court handles these citations, Hennessey said the University is often made aware of the crime.

"Oftentimes, they’ll take sanction as well because the arrest is public information," he said.

WVU’s Student Conduct Code states, "when a student is charged by federal, state, or local authorities with a violation of law, the University will not request or agree to special consideration for that individual because of his or her status as a student."

Jon Bolt, interim director of WVU News and Information Services, said the Office of Student Judicial Affairs would notify students who are charged immediately.

"Depending on their involvement and what was the outcome, their penalties could range from a warning to expulsion," he said.

Morgantown has a new fire chief that is increasing enforcement on couch burnings. I read it in the Morgantown newspaper. Cowboy Chris and others should just calm down and celebrate responsibly. For the most part, the police and fire departments do a good job. Go WVU!

Over the next of months I as well as several of my friends will be passing out petitions to get officers Runyon and Lucas Fired. They will be delivered to a City Council meeting. A couple of my friends are trying to phone the Sean Hannity show and make sean aware of how the city has the fire marshal condemn buildings that the city, university, or developers want instead of using eminent domain.

PD 104 is a member of the Morgantown Police department and friend of Missy Myers a real winner. They (MPD)are under investigation for not reporting crimes. As everone knows they have a lower approval rating than congress. And I pay more taxes than their officers make a year.

Cowboy Chris, AKA Chris Prigge, is not a college student. He is forty years+, and drives to Morgantown from the DC area every weekend. You will see him in just about all the bars. Cowboy Chris makes the drive every weekend looking for freshman college girls. He usually gets the crap kicked out of him by college dudes, and last year even a female police officer beat him up.

Cowboy Chris is an idiot and probably started all of the fires. Someone track him down and call the cops.

Nothing happened. It was dead after the game last night. Cowboy, I waited for Thursday night and nothing happened. I don't think you are a real student. If you were, you would know how we do things.

First of all, there will be no burning of the entire town. A few couches get burned and half of you think it is a tragedy and the other half believe they are super cool. It isn't really a big deal anymore. It used to be a nightly thing and people got hurt, homes were burned down and cars destroyed. Once it became out of control, the city decided to bring down Sunnyside, and that they did. In all reality, most of the firemen and city officials could care less about the minor burning that happens these days, they just bulk up to keep it from getting out of control like it used to. Ever since the Morgantown party scene died there hasn't been to much to worry about, the city just puts some officers on the streets and the students stay in and wait to talk about it the next day. A couple couches will burn, some students will get ticketed, the University will say they are embarassed, the fireman will get to play with their toys and everybody will be back on here talking about it.

I think the same idiot keeps complaining and doesn't use a name. What a girly man. Stay home if you don't like it. If cited for simply watching a couch you should all complain to the civil liberties union. Fight it and create a mess for the city.

Yay, the team close to where I live can put a ball through a circle more times than another team that lives far away. Lets burn everything we can find to celebrate.

You make us look like idiots and the white trash the rest of the country assumes we are. Not to mention it steals all the headlines.

Saturday night the cops were arresting people for malicious burning. The state fire marshall was on campus yesterday making arrests. Why would you risk having that as a criminal record? It may not be a felony, I don't know, but my brother got a shoplifting charge that was not a felony. It has cost him several job opportunities, and a lot of money. Again, let the team get the headlines.

Bring non-students or alumni to couch burn. They can't be expelled and will leave town without paying their fines. The fire marshal is trash.
