Multiple fires, couch burnings keep authorities busy after win

Couch

The charred remains of a couch sits on the side of a road in Sunnyside after the basketball game Saturday night.

The Morgantown Fire Department responded to as many as 27 fires Saturday night following West Virginia University’s win against Georgetown University for the title of Big East Tournament champions.

Most fires were in student housing areas, said Morgantown Fire Department Capt. Dave Bolyard. He said many seemed to be in the Sunnyside area and the North Willey, Spruce and Price streets area.

Approximately four were dumpster fires, Bolyard said, adding there is still damage attributed to dumpster fires.

"Any time there’s a fire in a dumpster, the company that has the dumpster claims that the damage destroys the plastic lids," Bolyard said. He did not know if any other damage was caused by fires Saturday.

The Morgantown Police Department also responded to approximately 15 calls about fires.

They were spread out between Sunnyside and the Snyder Street area, said MPD Sgt. Bryon Hennessey.

He said arrests were made for malicious burning and attempting to start street fires.

"Other than that, it was a pretty normal night for a weekend," Hennessey said. "The biggest problems were street and dumpster fires."

The amount of penalties for malicious fires rose last May as an amendment to the Morgantown City Prevention Codes was passed by the Morgantown City Council.

If found guilty, the person is fined $1,000. Malicious burning includes couches and dumpster fires, among other things.

While the city court handles these citations, Hennessey said the University is often made aware of the crime.

"Oftentimes, they’ll take sanction as well because the arrest is public information," he said.

WVU’s Student Conduct Code states, "when a student is charged by federal, state, or local authorities with a violation of law, the University will not request or agree to special consideration for that individual because of his or her status as a student."

Jon Bolt, interim director of WVU News and Information Services, said the Office of Student Judicial Affairs would notify students who are charged immediately.

"Depending on their involvement and what was the outcome, their penalties could range from a warning to expulsion," he said.

If you don't like the couch burning don't watch. I'm sick of these old townies that love the the city bums. It's not in your neighborhood so shut up or move.

Arrest and expel all couch burners. They are the rednecks that make our college look horrible and don't belong in this town.

Bonfires have been a college tradition for generations. How come the SGA (or some other student organization) doesn't have a planned couch fire in a designated area where everyone can meet and burn couches to their hearts content? Fire dept. & police dept. notified. Or is this just not crazy enough for the WVU student body? However, if you did this, I bet ESPN would be on hand to telecast the "greatest couch fire on earth." Maybe even Guiness (the record book not the beer) would pick it up. Just an idea.

for all this talk of 'tradition', it seems to be a way to perpetuate breaking the law and causing danger.

If 'tradition' is what makes the couch burnings necessary, than why is it still illegal? it doesn't make sense, and I don't feel bad for the people that get caught. there are better ways to celebrate.

sad to see that so many of those articles about poor fan behavior are correct.

Please! Have a little class. Let's celebrate a fantastic Big East Champsionship with dignity. You are turning our proud school into a mockery (The attitude already is the we are a bunch of drunk, uneducated hillbillies who'd light their own butts on fire - yes, I now live in SEC country which is it's own problem). Don't drag down what our basketball team has accomplished by childish actions. If we manage to win the tourney, Morgantown will burn down. That's not the way to show how proud we are of our guys! Let's Go Mountaineers!

I hope we make the final four and win it all. But I am not going to risk being suspended or expelled for setting a stupid couch on fire. The fire marshalls were on campus today pulling people out of class. That is what happens when you put videos and pictures on youtube and facebook. This crap takes away from what the team accomplished. Let the headlines be about Da or Ebanks, not some stupid couch fire.

Right on! Morgantown will burn down and those that don't like it are welcome to leave. Remember to call the fire department before the fire is out so that they can be videotaped for YouTube to show the world what idiots Morgantowns finest are. Citations also are great firestarters. I lit my fireplace with a speeding ticket

If people are getting this upset over the activities after the Big East Tournament, wait until WVU makes a run at the NCAA's

Nice job throwing the word idiot around, everyone. Please think of something a bit more creative. Matt or anonymous or whoever else has commented on this article have never said anything against the students. Please go back, re-read the comments, and see where someone said anything about supporting the police rather than the students. It hasn't happened--your argument is simply your pathetic self trying to manufacture controvery by calling some anonymous person an idiot. You all are ignorant and ridiculous. Get a hobby.

Where did anyone on here say that they were against the students?

Presumption?

Couch burning is part of WVU...don't live in Sunnyside if you don't like it.

So, this person who is on the side of the police and against anything most students believe in is Matt the idiot.

Who thinks that Tonya, Kelly and Kayla are the same person posting repeatedly? It seems funny because none of those people can spell/ cultivate a coherent sentence. Why not comment on the ARTICLE, ladies?

Will this person who goes by no name please get a job so that people like I can stop supporting you. All you do is criticize everyone who dissagrees with you. You are a crybaby and a narc and probably own 20 cats.

I wasn't aware that "anonymous person" designated themselves as woman, so your assumption, Kelly, that they "probable never dates and ownes 15 cats" is not only lacking in correct spelling, but also any evidence. Nice try at being clever, though.

As I said, a designated bonfire would not stop street fires. That's the point in setting the street fire in the first place, it's against the rules! In all probability, the number of illegal fires would probably increase if the university held a sanctioned bonfire, just to show that rebel spirit! Ha!

This anonymous person is the idiot and probably the one that calls the police and complains about everyone and everything. She probable never dates and ownes 15 cats. And by the way, everyone is glad Fetty is gone and no one who recieves citations for parking, speeding, watching a bon fire, etc. in Morgatown pays them because the City treats everone like trash and is corrupt. And I hope your buddy Ron Justice looses the election.

It's easy to attack others for their opinion (Kayla) when you obviously lack the intellect to type a coherent sentence, let alone offer constructive criticism of your own.

I don't know that a designated area would work for student bonfires, but it is certainly an idea worth exploring. Student culture (for some) dictates that after huge WVU wins, couches, etc. are burned. It would be much more difficult for the University to completely stop the problem, than it would be for them to try and offer safer alternatives.

Kayla, you are a "stupid idiot." When that person suggested a designated bonfire they were probably thinking of something along the lines of a pep rally-type activity. Atleast this way the students who want to burn furniture can do it without causing any harm. Think before you post an incoherent comment.
