A resolution to increase handicapped parking spaces on campus was presented at Wednesday’s West Virginia University Student Government Association meeting. The resolution said the parking lot between Brooks Hall and the Life Sciences Building provides access to multiple buildings with elevators on the Downtown campus. Gov. Taylor Richmond and Gov. Scott Covitz drafted the resolution to convert extra parking spaces in Lot 10, between the buildings, to handicapped parking. "There is inadequate parking for handicapped people, especially with crutches or wheelchairs," Richmond said. "We have to cater to those with special needs, and the resolution doesn’t say anything besides that." The parking lot was convenient because both the Business & Economics building and Brooks Hall allow people with disabilities to travel between different elevations on campus, Richmond said, adding the decision to write the resolution was brought up during a Parking and Transportation Committee meeting. SGA will vote on this resolution during next Wednesday’s meeting. During governors’ reports, Richmond said the relaxed overnight visitation policy was going well at Pierpont Hall because students "were willing to keep responsible." "Fieldcrest, Dadisman and Stalnaker (halls) have put a request in to adopt this policy for next year," he said. Pierpont’s visitation policy allows students to sign in members of the opposite sex overnight. The current visitation policy, which only allows students to sign in members of the same sex overnight, is inadequate and useless, said Don Saas, a junior political science major. Gov. Paul Kast urged student organizations to attend Student Organization Awareness Week during his report. Attendance could teach organizations how to run a successful club and gain membership, he said. A resolution to pass the Safe Relocation of Intoxicated Drivers Easily program was in the works, said Gov. Cameron Taylor. Freshman environmental protection major Ron Hogerheide presented the SafeRide program during the Aug. 27 meeting in an effort to decrease incidents of drunken driving on campus. The program would provide certified chauffeurs to pick up intoxicated students and take them home using University vehicles. Debate occurred over liability issues during that meeting.
