Oct. 1 will be a golden day for the United Way and West Virginia University for the second annual Gold Rush football game.
WVU will play Colorado and students will pack the stands wearing gold T-shirts.
The Student Government Association will be selling official Gold Rush T-shirts for $10 and are encouraging students to wear them to the game.
The T-shirts will say “Gold Rush” and feature the date of the game. All proceeds will benefit the United Way.
The shirts will be available at several functions in the coming weeks.
The first was freshman convocation, where 351 shirts were sold, totaling $3,510.
“Its a great money-maker,” said SGA Governor Molly Wilson, who is leading the Gold Rush this year.
More than $11,000 was made in T-shirt sales from students last year, the most in the United Way campaign. More than 900 T-shirts were sold.
Wilson expects even more money to be raised this year. The goal is to make more than $20,000.
There are no plans for similar fundraisers for other sports, as the campaign only lasts until November, according to Wilson.
The idea for the fundraiser was submitted by a student last year, and due to its success, SGA decided to do it a second time.
“The participation from faculty and staff is always overwhelming,” said Brett White, special events coordinator for West Virginia University’s Center for Civic Engagement.
United Way is the only philanthropic organization officially supported by WVU.
Last year the University raised almost $300,000 for United Way throughout its campaign.
