Towing not up despite restricted parking on Monongahela Blvd.

Area recently deemed a ‘tow-away zone’

The Morgantown Police Department has not towed or ticketed any vehicles parked on Monongahela Boulevard since the area was designated a tow-away zone, said Police Chief Phil Scott.

Parking has been restricted from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on Monongahela Boulevard, near the Coliseum, since Oct. 5.

"As far as this is concerned, I haven’t heard anything. And no news is good news," Scott said.

The restriction was a joint effort between West Virginia Department of Highways and the City of Morgantown to promote safety.

But the restrictions eliminate parking spots for students, said Student Government Association Gov. Taylor Richmond.

"Put yourself in the shoes of those students. I’m trying to go to class - there’s no free parking on campus. What am I supposed to do? I can’t park here anymore," Richmond said.

"They’re targeting students that are going to class. That’s not fair."

Mountaineer Station, the University’s new parking garage, opened after the restrictions were put into place, providing additional parking for individuals who formerly parked on Monongahela Boulevard.

College students may not have the funds to pay to park everyday, Richmond said, who added he is working to try to drop the price per hour to park at Mountaineer Station to 50 cents

Parking costs 75 cents an hour at Mountaineer Station and $1 per hour at the Mountainlair.

Richmond criticized the hours the restrictions are enforced, saying it sends a mixed message.

"Why can’t there be parking during daylight hours, however it’s acceptable when it becomes dark outside and more unsafe?" Richmond said.

Free parking is still available in the Coliseum parking lot.

"Students (who are) having a hard time finding parking don’t know about parking in the rear or are choosing not to park there because of the distance from the shuttle stop," said Hugh Keirig, director of Transportation and Parking, earlier this year.
