A Web site designed to solicit feedback for West Virginia University’s 2020 strategic plan was launched Monday.

West Virginia University President James P. Clements announced the Web-based tool at Monday’s Faculty Senate meeting.

E-mails will be sent to University community members asking for responses to survey questions.

Some questions include: What are the biggest challenges facing our nation over the next 10 years? How can WVU address these issues? Where do you see WVU in the next 10 years? What changes should WVU take to achieve your vision?

The survey also asks a participant to: Describe WVU in one word.

Clements urged students, faculty and staff to respond to the survey so he can hear others’ opinions along with his own.

"A lot of people have told me that WVU has never been better positioned than they are now to make a difference, and I think they’re right," Clements said.

Goals the University needs to address in the new strategic plan include increasing research, student retention, graduation rates, diversity and multiculturalism on campus Clements said.

"In order to meet these goals, I know there are some issues we need to tackle," Clements said.

Clements is also concerned about is the current 23-1 student-to-faculty ratio.

"We have got to drop the number down," he said.

In the new strategic plan, the role of the University’s budget will be emphasized, Clements said, and will be reviewed and possibly tightened.

Mark Brazaitis, faculty representative from the Eberly College of Arts & Sciences, asked how WVU could be positioned to move forward when the budget is currently a concern.

Resource reallocation is a way to tackle budget issues, according to Clements, who added that while other institutions slashed their 2010-11 budgets, WVU has held steady and appears to be stable for the immediate future.
