Six members of the West Virginia University D1 Hockey team volunteered to read at Cheat Lake Elementary School Friday.
The players arrived at Cheat Lake Elementary around 9 a.m. to read to kindergarten students.
Each player read one story in four different kindergarten classrooms. The players read to more than 100 students during their visit.
After reading, the players took time to have a question and answer session with the students.
The kids were eager to talk to the players, asking a lot of questions, said Ronald Finafrock, a junior business management major on the hockey team. "They had a lot of hockey questions for us," he said.
Jeff Anderson, the team’s head coach, worked with the school to arrange for the hockey team to volunteer.
"I believe it is extremely important for the team to volunteer and do community service, it is a good cause, and I want my team to give back to the community," Anderson said.
The team had never volunteered at the elementary school before, but after receiving a positive response from all the students, Anderson said the team would like to return.
"As a future teacher, reading to kids at an early age is essential to their development, and the fact that they look up to us makes these experiences that much more rewarding," said Brandtin Holscher, a sophomore elementary education major.
Chris Wilder, a junior business management major said not many people are aware that WVU has a hockey team, adding events like this are a good way to participate in the community.
"It was a lot of fun seeing the kids have a good time, and it was great exposure for the hockey team," Wilder said.
Anderson added he tries to arrange opportunities for the hockey team to volunteer as much as possible. He also plans to have the team volunteer at Morgantown’s local Stepping Stones and Rehabilitation Hospital in the future.
"This opportunity was a fun experience for me, a sense of giving back to the same people that come out and support us every weekend," Finafrock said.
