Snow

Benches around campus were covered with inches of snow Monday afternoon as classes were canceled because of more than 20 inches of snow that fell over the weekend.

Students were forced to entertain themselves Monday as West Virginia University canceled classes after a deluge of as much of 20 inches of snow hit Morgantown.

Their chosen activities were varied. Some stayed inside to stay warm, while others were quick to spend the day outside enjoying the winter weather.

"We had a ‘Harry Potter' marathon in our living room," said Alexis Harmon Barbour, a senior sport and exercise psychology major. "We packed as many people in as possible with a bunch of snacks and watched the whole series."

Junior communications major Whitney Cregan said she was stuck in her apartment with her best friend.

"We watched USA and the movies they were airing all day," she said. "‘Titanic' and ‘Failure to Launch' were our favorites."

Video games were another popular option.

"I sat on my couch and played ‘Call of Duty' for about five hours straight," said Gerald Spiga, a junior pre-medicine major.

He and his roommates played video games and pool in their apartment for the entire day because they couldn't leave, he said.

Senior nursing major Kacie Legg said she and her friends set up Guitar Hero and had a tournament for the afternoon after they tired of watching movies.

When students chose to get outside and get some fresh air, sledding or snowboarding down the streets was often deemed the best idea.

"We used an air mattress we found, piled as many people as possible on and sledded down Spruce Street," said Emily Hibbs, a junior public relations major.

Matt Johnson, a junior general studies major, opted for snowboarding down High Street.

"I thought, there's no reason not to," he said. "It sucked having to walk back up the hill, and there were a lot of people, but it was still fun nonetheless."

No matter how they spent the day, many students agreed Monday should not be spent doing schoolwork.

"I have a lot of work to do, but I've just been updating my Twitter and Facebook," said junior interior design major Kelsey Rigel. "You can't do homework – that's the whole point of having a snow day."
