The staff of The Daily Athenaeum would like to wish the West Virginia University men’s and women’s basketball teams good luck in the upcoming NCAA basketball tournaments.

The second-seeded men’s team takes the court in an East Region opening round matchup against Morgan State University today at 12:15 p.m. at the HSBC Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

The game will be televised by CBS and can be streamed live on your computer at www.cbssports.com.

The third-seeded women’s team will square off against Lamar in the opening round of the Memphis Region Sunday at 9:30 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.

Both Mountaineer squads earned their highest NCAA tournament seed of the modern era and are coming off successful Big East Conference tournaments.

The men took home the Big East Tournament Championship in Madison Square Garden by knocking off Georgetown in the final on a Da’Sean Butler game winner.

The women were Big East Tournament runners-up after coming up short against undefeated Connecticut on its home court.

While we feel both teams should have been seeded higher, we hope the squads can forget about being
snubbed and take advantage of their momentum to make deep runs into their respective NCAA tournaments.

Success for both squads means a lot to the school’s basketball programs, the University and the state of West Virginia.

A common theme among players and coaches in the time after the men’s championship victory was the desire to win a championship for all the supporters of the program and even for the people of West Virginia.

Such success – from both the men and the women – really does mean a lot to the people of this state and members of the University community.

The teams’ achievements have caused even casual observers to take notice.

When the teams take the court in the coming days, the eyes of the people of this state and others with connections to this University from all across the country will be squarely set upon the Mountaineers.

With more wins comes increased positive (and free) publicity for the University as our teams compete against the top programs in the country – which is right where the men’s and women’s basketball teams belong.
