Thanksgiving recess unofficially begins Saturday and extends through the next week.

While some very lucky (or lazy) students have already left town, the majority won’t be packing up until today or tomorrow.

Some won’t even be going home.

For those departing the greater Morgantown area, take steps to keep your residence safe in your absence.

There are always burglaries and forced entries over holiday breaks.

These are inevitable.

But little actions can go a long way in preventing crime. Make sure to lock all entry points, including windows, doors, pet doors and garages.

Ask your landlord to stop by while you’re gone or leave a key with a trusted individual staying in town, so they can check up on your residence and belongings.

And while it may add a few dollars to your electric bill, consider putting a television or light on a timer to deter criminals.

Every effort helps.

Also, be sure to take as many valuable belongings with you as possible.

Things like computers (at least the hard-drives), gaming systems and iPods should all be packed or at least stowed away in a safe place.

Personal information like bank statements, checkbooks, Social Security cards or even West Virginia University information or federal PINs should all be accounted for.

Also over the break, the WVU men’s basketball team plays The Citadel Nov. 24 at the Charleston Civic Center.

Students from the Southern part of the state should take the opportunity with friends and family to see the No. 8 ranked Mountaineers in action.

And of course, WVU football hosts arch-rival the University of Pittsburgh Friday, Nov. 27, at Mountaineer Field.

Most remember what transpired the last time Pitt came to town.

This time, however, the tables are turned, and WVU has the opportunity to spoil Pitt’s successful season.

Student tickets still remain for the nationally televised contest. Head Coach Bill Stewart and the rest of the Old Gold and Blue will need your help to maintain their undefeated home record this season against No. 8 ranked Pitt in Morgantown under the lights.

Have a fun but safe Thanksgiving recess.

Use the break to relax before the final stretch of the semester and the imminent stress accompanying finals.

And consider returning to Morgantown early in order to pack Mountaineer Field in gold and cheer on the team.
