Much of Morgantown was on alert late Friday night.
West Virginia University sent out a text alert at 12:08 a.m. stating that an armed gunman was near North High Street and advised students to stay indoors.
The University then sent out a text alert at 1:18 a.m. giving the "all clear" for students to resume normal activities.
A BB gun was turned into the Morgantown Police by the owner, according to University Police. The student was cited with possession of an airgun within the city limits.
The owner of the gun was not the same person believed to have taken the gun outside. Morgantown Police were still searching for that person, also believed to be a student, early Saturday, according to WVU officials.
At 1 a.m., University Police Chief Bob Roberts told The Daily Athenaeum that it was important for all people to stay indoors because the suspect was still at-large.
It was confirmed that both Dadisman and Stalnaker Halls, two downtown residence halls located on North High Street, were on lockdown during the incident.
There were also reports that students inside the Mountainlair were confined to the Gluck Theatre and Side Pocket.
