Scouts from at least 12 NFL teams gathered at the Caperton Indoor Facility Thursday afternoon to watch 12 former West Virginia football players participate in West Virginia’s NFL Pro Day.
Highlighting the field were quarterback Jarrett Brown, offensive lineman Selvish Capers, and wide receiver Alric Arnett.
Similar to last year’s Pro Day, all eyes were again on the quarterback position as Brown showcased his ability as a passer.
Brown did not participate in running drills but did throw to former teammates Arnett and Wes Lyons.
The 6-foot-4 West Palm Beach, Fla., native impressed as he continually hit Arnett and Lyons with a variety of passes and routes that included 5-yard hitch routes, fly routes and out patterns.
Brown has been working out in Miami in order to prepare himself for the upcoming draft in April.
"This whole process has been enjoyable and fun," Brown said. "It has been a long couple of months for me between the injury, the Senior Bowl, then the NFL Combine and finally this.
"I am just happy that April 22 is coming soon."
One area that Brown felt he impressed scouts with was his mental abilities.
"I think I surprised a lot of teams in this process through what I know on the board and what I can draw up," he said. "It’s not just my skill set on the field."
Capers, who also received a lot of attention from scouts, particularly, the Pittsburgh Steelers, looked to improve upon his numbers from the February Combine.
"I think I have improved since the Combine with my numbers, and that’s all I was looking forward to be doing here at pro day," Capers said.
Capers ran a 5.06 in the 40-yard dash unofficially, and he also upped his bench press reps from 19 at the NFL Combine to 22 reps Thursday.
Capers has been working out at the Wellness Performance Institute in Atlanta.
"I think I did well, and I am satisfied," Capers said. "I have a goal that I want to accomplish.
As for Arnett, the former West Virginia receiver ran a 4.50 in the 40-yard dash unofficially and looked to have impressed scouts with his ability in footwork drills.
"I think everything went pretty smooth today, and I think I improved upon my number from the Combine," Arnett said.
Arnett hopes his efforts Thursday caught the attention of some NFL scouts.
"I think my route running may have opened some eyes," Arnett said. "They don’t really give you much feedback, though."
Others that worked out included defensive backs Boogie Allen, Guesly Dervil, Kent Richardson, Nate Sowers, Anthony Wood, linebacker Ovid Goulbourne and punter Scott Kozlowski.
