Connecticut’s Tina Charles goes under West Virginia’s Asya Bussie for a shot in the first half of the Huskies’ win over the Mountaineers Tuesday.

The No. 8 West Virginia women’s basketball team kept it close for one half but was overwhelmed by No 1. Connecticut Wednesday, falling 80-47.

The Mountaineers (20-3, 7-2 Big East Conference) held the Huskies (22-0, 9-0 Big East) to their lowest first-half point total of the season as UConn led just 32-24 at halftime.

The win marked the Huskies’ 61st consecutive win.

It wasn’t UConn’s all-Americans Maya Moore or Tina Charles who led Connecticut in scoring, though, as senior Kalana Greene ended with a team-high 18 points and three steals.

Moore scored 15 points while grabbing a season-high 14 rebounds.

Charles, who was held to five points in the first half, ended with 14 points and had six rebounds.

That trio of scorers led the Huskies to 58.3 percent shooting from the field compared to West Virginia’s 33.3 percent.

The Huskies also had an advantage at the free-throw line, finishing 19-for-25 from the charity stripe compared to the Mountaineers’ 5-for-12 performance.

Connecticut was 19-for-25 from the stripe while the Mountaineers were just 5-for-12.

Sarah Miles led the way for the Mountaineers with 14 points, but the junior had six turnovers compared to just two assists.

Liz Repella, who leads the Mountaineers in scoring this season, scored 13 points on 3-for-5 3-point shooting.

Junior Korinne Campbell, who entered as the Mountaineers’ third leading scorer, finished the game with four points, shooting just 2-for-12 from the field.

West Virginia shot just 32.4 percent in the first half while Connecticut shot 47.8 percent.

The Mountaineers trailed 32-26 with 19:46 left in the second half, but that was as close as they would get.

Connecticut’s answer to the six-point margin was a 28-6 run to lead 60-32 with 10:19 remaining in the second half.

West Virginia held its own for the rest of the game being outscored 20-15.

Connecticut is now 21-1 all-time against West Virginia. The Mountaineers won the two team’s first meeting in 1982.
