The No. 25 West Virginia club hockey team traveled to State College, Pa., to take on the No. 6 Penn State Icers last weekend. The weekend didn’t end like the team wanted. On Friday night, West Virginia was defeated 10-1, and Saturday it was defeated 8-2. "We came out Friday night, with the exception of the first period, and we played well," said captain Sean McFadden. West Virginia shut down a number of Penn State power plays but were unable to convert on its own power plays. "We did score on the power play this weekend, but it is still being fine tuned." McFadden said. West Virginia has shown early success this season posting a 5-4 record, after its two losses to Penn State. All four losses have come to opponents ranked inside the top 10 while the team is still undefeated in league play and its goal of winning the CHMA title is still in tact. Assistant captains Luke Sonnefeld, Mitch Rosendale and Kris Anderson are all sophomore forwards who McFadden looks upon to lead the team. "We look to these players as top scorers," McFadden said. "We rely on them to carry a big part of the scoring as the season progresses." SOFTBALL The West Virginia club softball team started its conference play this past weekend with three games against Pittsburgh. After losing the first game 11-0, the team came back to win the second game 13-3 and completed the three game series with a 11-9 victory in the third game. Sophomore left-fielder Rebecca Jackson was 9-for-14 through the series and junior catcher Brooke Hinkle went 5-for-6. Katelyn Briggs led WVU on the mound, striking out 11 and allowing just five runs in her eleven innings pitched. WOMEN’S RUGBY The women’s club rugby team traveled to Oxford, Ohio, as the American Rugby Union’s No. 2 seed in the Division II college women’s rugby tournament. In Sweet 16 play, WVU defeated Kent State 15-12. Sunday, the team advanced to Elite Eight but lost to Ball State 17-5. Despite the loss, the team was pleased with the Elite Eight appearance after failing to make it to the Midwest Playoffs since 2006. MEN’S RUGBY The men’s rugby team lost to Michigan State 18-12 before losing to Ball State 17-7, ending the team’s season.
