The West Virginia club tennis team competed in a 20-team tournament last weekend hosted by the United States Tennis Association Virginia Chapter at the University of Mary Washington.
West Virginia defeated the University of Mary Washington 15-6 in its first match of the tournament Saturday.
WVU club tennis President Peter Deremer won in men's singles, while Casey Smithson and Jamie Hanna took men's doubles.
"It felt great to get back into the competition," Deremer said. "The team did a good job of getting back into things quickly to have a successful Saturday."
WVU defeated William and Mary's ‘B' team 11-10 in a tiebreaker. Smithson and Hanna continued their success in men's doubles, finishing with a 4-0 victory.
In its third match of the day, WVU was defeated in a tiebreaker to North Carolina State, 11-10. Andrew Huey and Kelsey Ellison were strong in the loss, leading the team to a 4-0 victory in mixed doubles to help force the tiebreaker.
"Kelsey and Andrew have played all of our mixed doubles this fall," Deremer said. "They played together at Greenbrier, and something just clicked."
Despite the loss to NC State, the team finished in first place for its pool, moving into the gold bracket for Sunday's matches.
Huey and Ellison continued to play strong posting a 4-1 victory Sunday, but it was not enough as the William and Mary ‘A' team defeated WVU 18-10.
"William and Mary's ‘A' team surprised us. They came out better than normal, and they deserved the win, we just couldn't pull it together," Deremer said.
In its last match of the tournament despite a strong victory from Hanna and Smithson, WVU was defeated 19-13 by Virginia.
The team gained 30 points toward its sectional ranking. The 30 points was the most it has gained in competition this season.
"It definitely helped us keep our sixth-place ranking," Deremer said. "If we had not gotten them, James Madison would have jumped us."
Deremer said he feels confident that the team can put forward a good finish in sectionals.
