WVU Fall Family Weekend schedule of events

All weekend

The student Recreation Center is open, free of charge, to all family members of West Virginia University students.

The Visitors Resource Center will be giving campus tours. Call 304-293-3489 or visit http://visit.wvu.edu to make an appointment. Reservations are required.

Friday, Oct. 2

All day - Parents are invited to attend class with their student.

1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. – All current School of Journalism students and their families are ivited to an open house. Tours of the building will be given and faculty and staff will be on hand.

1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – The School of Business and Economics will be hosting its annual opening house, answering questions about the admission process, majors and the degree process, among other things.

4 p.m. to 6 p.m. – Families and students can meet faculty, tour labs and other facilities in the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. A reception will be held in the atrium at the Engineering Sciences Building Annex and professor Jack Byrd will give a brief presentation about the freshman program.

4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – The Career Services Center will hold its "Chocolate Covered Careers" open house. It will include tours of their newly renovated demonstrations of MountaineerTRAK, the new employment assistance software as well as the new "Job Kiosk" program, both being introduced for the fall semester. The event is being sponsored by Hershey Foods.

4 p.m. to 6 p.m. – The WVU African Dance Ensemble will perform on the 4th floor lobby of Allen Hall, home of the College of Human Resources and Education. There will also be presentations about the College’s new Office for Diversity and Global Initiatives.

5 p.m. to 7 p.m. – WVU administrations, including President James Clements, will be on hand to mingle with students and parents in the Vandalia Lounge at the Mountainlair for the University’s welcome reception.

6 p.m. to 9 p.m. – Scuba Diving lessons will be available, free of charge, at the Student Recreation Center. Equipment is provided and the lesson is held with trained with trained professionals.

6 p.m. to 8 p.m. – The women’s soccer team will take on Notre Dame at the Dick Dlesk Stadium. Tickets are available at the gate the night of the game, or at the WVU Ticket Office during the week of the game. Students are admitted free with their Mountaineer ID Card.

6 p.m. to 9 p.m. – Downtown Morgantown will host ArtsWalk, a self-guided tour of Morgantown’s Arts, Entertainment and Dining District, featuring galleries, street musicians and performing artists, shopping and dining. Over 40 businesses participate, staying open late and hosting event specials.

6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. – The College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame will induct three graduates into its 2009 Hall of Fame and name its 2009 Outstanding Alumnus. Families and students are invited to attend.

7:30 p.m. – "And the World Goes ‘Round," a cabaret-style show featuring the music of John Kander and Fred Ebb, performed by WVU students, will be held at the Creative Arts Center. Parents can get the in-house faculty and staff ticket price of $12 by identifying themselves for the "Fall Family Weekend" rate at the time of ticket purchase.

8:30 p.m. – Mountaineer Idol will be held in the Mountainlair Ballrooms, with an after part at 10 p.m.

 

Saturday, October 3

10 a.m. to noon – Each residence hall will hold activities unless otherwise indicated.

Arnold Hall Brunch – Main Lounge beginning at 10 a.m.

Boreman Hall Brunch – Resident Faculty Leader Home beginning at 10 a.m.

Dadisman & Stalnaker Hall Brunch – Stalnaker Hall Terrace Cafe beginning at 10 a.m.

Bennett, Braxton, Brooke & Lyon – RFL’s Courtyard behind the Towers complex at 10 a.m.

Fieldcrest Hall – Resident Faculty Leader Home

Lincoln Hall Brunch – Courtyard

Honors Hall Brunch and Classes Brunch at 10 a.m.

Pierpont Brunch – RFL Home at 9:30 a.m.

Summit Hall Brunch – Lobby and RFL Home at 10 a.m.

10 a.m. – The College of Business and Economics’ Professional Ethics club will meet in Room 458 at the College to discuss ethics in business. There will also be a presentation on why the values promoted by the club are important to success as a student and professional.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Student organizations in the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources will give presentations and host a picnic lunch for students and their family. All activities will take place in the Atrium of the new addition to the Engineering Sciences Building or directly outside the Atrium entrance located adjacent to Parking Area 40 on Evansdale Drive.

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – The Student Recreation Center will host ultimate Mountaineer Experience events. Pick-up basketball games and group Zumba and spinning will be available. The women’s soccer team and coaches will make a special appearance at 2 p.m., and the Mountaineer mascot will attend.

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Eberly professor of Civil War Studies, Dr. Peter S. Carmichael, will give a lecture: Civil War Generals take to the Football Gridiron in Ming Hsieh Hall, room 122. Carmichael will use football as an analogy of war, creating an all-star football team of Civil War Officers.

3 p.m. – The West Virginia University Billiards Club will present a family weekend billiards tournament in the mountainlair game area. Teams should arrive by 2 p.m. to register and warm-up. The registration fee is $10 and cash prizes wil be awarded to the top three parent student duos.

3 p.m. and 7 p.m. – RAIN will perform the full range of the Beatles discography live onstage. Tickets can be ordered by calling the Box Office at 304-293-SHOW or downloading an order for at http://events.wvu.edu/uas/09-10/rain/index.shtml.

 

Sunday, October 4

The women’s soccer team will take on Villanova at the Dick Dlesk Stadium. Tickets are available at the gate the night of the game, or at the WVU Ticket Office during the week of the game. Parents can receive a discounted ticket if they present their "parent coupon" at the gate. Students are admitted free with their Mountaineer ID Card.
