The West Virginia House passed a bill that would make it illegal for anyone to tattoo the whites of a person’s eyeballs.

This is called scleral tattooing and it is the practice of producing an indelible mark or figure on the human eye by scarring or inserting a pigment on, in, or under the ocular surface using needles, scalpels or other related equipment, according to West Virginia Code.

This practice could result in permanent eye scarring, hemorrhaging and in extreme cases, blindness.

House Bill 4161 now much be passed by the Senate and signed off on by the governor to be enacted.
