The West Virginia baseball team has played 33 games so far this season and holds a 15-18 record, which is well shy of the team’s lofty expectations. While the team has not had many excellent performances, there has been a lot of consistency on the team, starting with Vince Ippoliti.

On Wednesday the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) added WVU relief pitcher, Jacob Watters, to the Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List. Watters is a sophomore relief pitcher for the Mountaineers and has seen action in 11 games this season.

Following a 9-4 loss to Kansas State on Sunday, West Virginia dropped its fourth straight Big 12 series. The Mountaineers gave up two runs in each of the last three innings to fall behind and drop the third game of the series.

West Virginia picked up an extra-inning win over Kansas State while using just two pitchers. Jackson Wolf pitched the first eight innings for West Virginia and Jacob Watters pitched the last three innings to help WVU pick up a 4-3 win in 11 innings.

At the beginning of the 2021 college baseball season, West Virginia was set to have two notable starting pitchers with Jackson Wolf and Ryan Bergert on the mound. Due to an injury to Bergert, Wolf has had to shoulder the load as the lone Mountaineer ace.

The West Virginia baseball team’s losing streak continued on Friday night with a 6-3 loss against the Baylor Bears in Waco, Texas, to open a three-game Big 12 series.

The West Virginia baseball team has been on a downward spiral as it has lost three straight games, including a loss against Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon. Now, the Mountaineers will face Baylor in a three-game series starting Friday.

On Tuesday, the Backyard Brawl will be played starting at 3 p.m. in Pittsburgh. Both Pittsburgh and West Virginia are just over 20 games into the season and so far the difference between the two is small.

After a big 4-3 win over No. 16 Oklahoma State on Thursday, West Virginia fell flat on Friday night, suffering a 7-2 loss to the Cowboys. Adam Tulloch started for the Mountaineers and struggled with command early, walking three batters, allowing one hit and a run in the first inning.

On Saturday, West Virginia and Kansas played a doubleheader with two completely opposite outcomes. In the first game, Kansas took it to WVU and came out with a 9-2 victory, but in the second game, West Virginia won 15-2 after a mercy rule was called into play.

West Virginia opened up Big 12 play with a big 11-0 victory over Kansas on Friday night. The West Virginia pitching staff was excellent in the victory allowing just six hits and striking out nine Jayhawk batters.

The West Virginia baseball team has gotten off to a rocky start with an 8-8 record through its first 16 non-conference games. The offense has not been the problem as the team has averaged over five runs per game with Victor Scott leading the way in most offensive statistics.

On Sunday, the West Virginia baseball team dropped the final game of its series with Coastal Carolina by a score of 9-6. West Virginia had an opportunity to tie or win the game with bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning, but was unable to capitalize.

On Saturday, the No. 23 West Virginia baseball team split a doubleheader with Central Michigan. West Virginia lost the first game 12-4, but won the second game, 8-7, thanks to a tenth inning walk off home run from Mikey Kluska.

The No. 23 West Virginia baseball team will play its home opener Friday versus Central Michigan. The Mountaineers were originally scheduled to play their home opener on March 5 versus Kent State but the team had to take a COVID-19 pause and miss four games.

The Coastal Carolina Baseball Tournament ended Sunday afternoon as the No. 23 Mountaineers picked up a 9-7 victory over Bryant. West Virginia trailed for the first eight innings but the bulldogs were unable to finish the game on top.

The Coastal Carolina Baseball Tournament started Friday morning with No. 23 West Virginia picking up a 13-3 victory over Kennesaw State. The Mountaineers were led by seven shutout innings from starting left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf.
