After going winless in conference play during the regular season, the West Virginia men’s soccer team picked up the much bigger victory on Sunday: a conference championship.

At FirstEnergy Stadium in Akron, Ohio, the No. 6 seed Mountaineers defeated No. 3 seed Bowling Green, 1-0, in the MAC Championship Final.

The game was a constant back-and-forth battle as neither team was able to score in the game’s first half.

Coming out of halftime, the story of the game was more of the same.

The two teams combined for eight shots in the second half before a header from West Virginia’s Luke McCormick found the back of the net in the 86th minute.

Bowling Green managed to get off another shot in the game’s final minute, which was then blocked by WVU goalkeeper Steven Tekesky. The Falcons were unable to score, ultimately giving the Mountaineers the win.

With the win, West Virginia picked up an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
