The West Virginia University gymnastics team traveled to Durham, New Hampshire, this weekend to compete against New Hampshire University, Brown, and George Washington in a quad meet. 

WVU’s complete rotation order was floor, vault, uneven bars, and balance beam. The Mountaineers opened the meet on the floor for the first time this season. 

In the floor event, two Mountaineers, junior McKenna Linnen and sophomore Kendra Combs, opened the rotation and tied for fifth place with two other gymnasts from New Hampshire with a score of 9.8. Freshman Kianna Yancey rounded the Mountaineers in the top 10 with her score of 9.775, placing her in a tie for ninth. 

Senior Erica Fontaine and freshman Abbie Pierson had a matching score of 9.7, and senior Chole Cluchey added her score of 9.65. The Mountaineers’ combined score in the floor event was 48.775. 

The Mountaineers were full of momentum for the vault event which allowed senior Julia Merwin and Kianna Yancey to get a score of 9.8s, tying for second — matching their season highs. Kaufman and Pierson tied for fourth place with their scores of 9.775. 

Cluchey anchored the lineup with a 9.75 total, and Kayla Yancey added her score of 9.625 for the Mountaineers’ total score of 48.900. With WVU’s score, the Mountaineers matched their season best total for the third time. 

Three Mountaineers helped WVU get a total score of 48.75 on the bars, tying for second place. 

Combs and the Yanceys finished with scores of 9.775 while Kayla Yancey matched her season-high total in tie. Cluchey followed with a score of 9.75 and tied for ninth, while sophomore Esperanza Abarca and Kaufman added their scores of 9.675 and 9.625, respectively.

For the final rotation, the Mountaineers hit five routines for a 48.65 mark on the beam. Abarca, Combs, and Linnen each had a score of 9.775 and all tied for fourth. Abarca matched her season high with the tie. 

Kaufman scored 9.675, earning her 13th place. Sophomore Rachel Hornung performed her floor routine for the first time this season, totaling a score of 9.65 and tying for 14th place. 

West Virginia ended in second place at New Hampshire’s quad-meet with a score of 195.072.

West Virginia closes its three week road swing with a tri-meet at No. 1 Oklahoma on Feb. 14 at 7:45 p.m. The team will also be competing against Texas Woman’s University.
