The West Virginia rifle team gained a conference victory over Army by a score of 4683-4648 on Sunday at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers (8-0, 7-0 GARC) were led by the top performance overall in junior David Koenders. Koenders amassed a combined score of 1179 (582 SB 597 AR) while senior Morgan Phillips provided the highest smallbore score with a 588 (99, 98, 99, 99, 98, 95) point effort.
As a team, West Virginia edged out Army (3-4, 3-4 GARC) in both smallbore (2316-2306) and air rifle (2367-2342).
Including Koenders, the Mountaineers had seven of the top 10 finishers in senior Milica Babic (third; 578 SB, 593 AR), freshman Akihito Shimizu (fourth; 576 SB, 593 AR), junior Sarah Osborn (fifth; 574 SB, 593 AR), freshman Malori Brown (sixth; 580 SB, 583 AR), junior Noah Barker (seventh; 579 SB, 583 AR) and sophomore Verena Zaisberger (tenth; 573 SB, 588 AR).
Rounding out the scoring for the Mountaineers were sophomore Jared Eddy (568 SB, 591 AR) and freshman Calista Smoyer (575 SB, 584 AR).
The team will resume action in a non-conference matchup at Ohio State on Saturday. The Mountaineers will host one more conference opponent in Kentucky on Feb. 15 before NCAA Qualifying matches.
