Sunday morning: West Virginia rifle shoots a 4710 to achieve victory over NC State.


The West Virginia rifle team fell to the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats in a very competitive matchup on Saturday morning in Morgantown.

Malori Brown led the way for the Mountaineers in the smallbore category. Her score of 589 placed third in scoring for the day. Six other Mountaineers followed behind Brown in the standings, which contributed to their overall team score of 2,335. 

In the air rifle category, Verena Zaisberger and Sarah Osborn led the way for the Mountaineers as they finished in third and fourth with scores of 596. The Mountaineers lacked enough scoring to place at the top of the standing, but received consistent scoring from Calista Smoyer and company in the middle of the pack. 

Kentucky outscored West Virginia 2,383 to 2,377 in the air rifle discipline and would go on to win by a score of 4,723-4,712. 

The Mountaineers will return to action on Saturday back in Morgantown in an NCAA Qualification match. The event will start at 8 a.m.
