West Virginia (8-5, 0-1) opened Big 12 play on the road against Texas Tech (11-4, 1-0) on Wednesday night, falling 3-1.
The Mountaineers were able to keep the first set close, with the Red Raiders winning by a score of 25-23. A crucial serve error late in the set helped Texas Techs come out on top.
In the second set, WVU held a 17-16 lead before Texas Tech rattled off five points in a row to take control and come out on top 25-20.
The Mountaineers had to hold off a Texas Tech rally in the third set but was able to win 25-23. The Red Raiders trailed 18-12 before storming back and tying the set at 21.
The final set ended with Texas Tech coming out on top 25-19.
Sophomore Kristina Jordan led the offense with 20 kills for the match, followed by senior Katelyn Evans with 14. Sophomore Lacey Zerwas had 40 assists.
The defense was paced by Zerwas with 19 digs for the match. Junior Alexa Hasting followed closely behind with 14.
WVU will be back in action on Saturday when they host the Oklahoma Sooners at 1 p.m at the WVU Coliseum.
