The West Virginia volleyball team opened up their 2019 season by defeating Delaware on Friday night, 3-1.

The matchup was WVU’s first of the Delaware Classic.

To start, the Mountaineers were able to open up by taking the first set by a narrow 25-23 margin. The Blue Hens were able to counter in the second set, picking up the win before WVU returned with another 25-23 win in the third set.

Holding the momentum, West Virginia was able to take the fourth set by a 25-15 score, thus securing the victory.

For the Mountaineers, junior Briana Lynch led the way with 16 kills, followed by sophomores Kristin Lux and Kristina Jordan, who each finished with 14 kills.

Lux also finished on the leaderboard for digs, with 11, being eclipsed by sophomore Lacey Zerwas (18) and junior Alexa Hasting (19).

On Saturday, the Mountaineers will continue to progress through the Delaware Classic as they take on Coppin State at 11 a.m., followed by Binghamton at 4:30 p.m.
